Shops’ tax bill 755 per cent higher than online rivals amid war of words over sales tax

Traditional brick and mortar retailers pay 755 per cent more – almost eight times – than their online rivals in business rates tax.

The figures come after Sainsbury’s and Marks and Spencer execs have voiced differing opinions over the prospect of an online sales tax.

Fresh analysis by real estate advisor Altus Group has found that some £2.91 of every £100 earned by British retailers, excluding non-store sales and fuel. However, large online retailers pay just 34p for every £100. 

The government’s consultation into an online sales tax, which some retailers hope would level the tax playing field between physical and online retail, closed last week.

A revenue-based online sales tax of one per cent on the online sale of goods to UK customers above an allowance of £2m could raise around £1bn a year, Altus Group analysis found.

Amazon to sublease warehouses as online shopping slows

Amazon is planning to sublease some of its warehouse space now that the pandemic-fueled surge in online shopping, which helped the e-commerce giant rake in soaring profits in the past two years, has eased.

Subleasing allows the company to “relieve the financial obligations associated with an existing building that no longer meets” its needs, Amazon spokesperson Alisa Carroll said.

Carroll didn’t disclose how much space the company plans to sublet. But citing anonymous sources, Bloomberg News and The Wall Street Journal reported earlier that the retailer would sublease at least 10 million square feet of space and could end more of its leases in states including New York, New Jersey and California.

Amazon opens its first fashion store in Los Angeles

Amazon opens its first brick-and-mortar fashion store today at The Americana at Brand, a shopping complex in Glendale, California. Announced earlier this year, the physical retail experience is described as a mix of Amazon Style app-based interactions, in-store styling-and-fitting services, online-to-IRL try-ons, and Amazon One palm-recognition-based checkouts—a blend of data-driven technology that makes the customer journey unique in the fashion space.

According to early reports, shoppers at the 30,000-square-foot store have the option to browse through the Amazon Style app and try their selections on in one of many fitting rooms—each equipped with touchscreens to instantly summon more styles, SKUs, and size options.
