All Of The Biggest Fashion Trends That Dominated The Red Carpet At The 2022 Met Gala

As the biggest and most anticipated night in the fashion calendar, the Met Gala is always a great indicator of which trends will be set to dominate in the coming months, and this year’s star-studded event was no different.

The theme was ‘Gilded Glamour’, and the high-profile guests took to the red carpet in suitably extravagant attire – from gowns strewn with feathers and heavy embellishment, to corset details and a big splash of hot pink.

These are the biggest fashion trends we spotted on the 2022 Met Gala red carpet:

Hot Pink

When Pier Paolo Piccioli dedicated his entire AW22 Valentino show to hot pink, we knew that it was set to be the shade of the season. Ultra-feminine, joy-bringing and a welcome departure from the blacks and neutrals that dominated our lockdown looks, there are few colours which make more of a statement right now – and the proof was on the red carpet at last night’s Met Gala.

Glenn Close, Sebastian Stan, and newly-wed Nicola Peltz-Beckham all opted for full Valentino AW22 runway looks, rocking the hot pink shade from head to toe – shoes, gloves and accessories included. Kiki Layne and SZA got in on the action too, in glorious pink gowns by Prabal Gurung and Vivienne Westwood respectively, while Emily In Paris’ Ashley Park showed how the shade can make just as much impact when worn with a contrast skirt – if not more.

Sunglasses At Night

Once the sole remit of hardcore ravers, and, frankly, the super-obnoxious, sunglasses at night take the prize for most unexpected fashion trend to emerge from this year’s Met Gala red carpet.

Are they there to mask a particularly vicious hangover? For protection from all the flashing cameras? Or simply because oversized sunnies still scream ‘it’s fashion, darling’ more than any other accessory? We’re not quite sure, to be honest – but one thing we do know is that Rosalia, Amy Schumer, Venus Williams, Christine Baranski, Jared Leto and Travis Barker all seem to have got the memo. And we’re lowkey obsessed.

Corsets

We saw the corsetry trend slowly emerge during the SS22 and AW22 show seasons, but last night’s Met Gala was the final proof we needed that corsets are the fashion investment we should be making this season.

From the more classical, Regency-esque creations worn by Paloma Elsesser, Laura Harrier, Maisie Williams and Billie Eilish (who even had the ‘heaving bosom’ look down to a T), to the latex bustiers incorporated into Bella and Gigi Hadid’s looks, corsets were absolutely everywhere – including on some of the men (Ben Platt and Lenny Kravitz did it best).

And the best part is that they are surprisingly versatile. Pop one on top of a voluminous skirt for instant evening glamour, or dress it down with jeans to nail that super-trendy Euphoria look. (Even better, we’ve rounded up all the best ones to buy now, here.)

The Naked Dress

The ‘naked dress’ has always been controversial – making it perfect for a statement red carpet entrance, naturally. Sexy is well and truly back for 2022, so it follows that the super-sheer, ‘leave nothing to the imagination’ look has more appeal than ever.

This year’s Met Gala saw the likes of Maude Apatow, Lily James, Vanessa Hudgens and Kerry Washington wear modern-day iterations of the trend, but also the return of the original ‘naked dress’ on none other than Kim Kardashian, who wore the sheer Jean Louis gown covered in strategically placed rhinestones worn by Marilyn Monroe to sing ‘Happy Birthday’ to JFK in 1962. The idea behind it then was ‘to wake people up’ – and it certainly had the same impact some 60 years later when Kardashian made her grand entrance towards the end of the night.

OTT Glamour

The Roaring Twenties got off to a rocky start, so now that restrictions are lifted and events back with a vengeance, fashion has gone all out in its desire for glamour, celebration and all things extravagant. That, and the fact that the 2022 Met Gala’s theme was ‘Gilded Glamour’, made for some truly fabulous red carpet looks – and all the OTT trimmings you could imagine.

Feathers, heavy embellishment, luxurious fabrics, sequins, rich embroidery, gob-stopper jewels, gowns which transform before our eyes… They were all in attendance, on the likes of Hailey Bieber, Lizzo, Cardi B, Jessica Chastain, Carey Mulligan, Blake Lively and Gemma Chan. Subtlety? We don’t know her.
