Aldi is officially open for business within the city of Sarasota.
The retailer, known for its discounted prices and no-frills approach to grocery shopping, is now officially open daily from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at 3501 S. Tamiami Trail in Sarasota at Westfield Siesta Key mall.
Aldi has taken over the former Lucky’s Market space at the shopping center, which closed in February 2020 following a corporate bankruptcy filing. The Aldi parcel is owned by Benderson Development Co. of Manatee County, as is the Esporta Fitness gym on the south side of the property.
The rest of the mall is owned by O’Connor Capital Partners, a real estate development, investment and management firm with offices in New York, Palm Beach and Mexico City.
Aldi has been on a rapid expansion path over the past few years. The grocer plans to be the third-largest U.S. grocery retailer by the end of 2022. That will involve opening one more Sarasota County store that we know of in the near future – in Venice’s Jacaranda Plaza, which is also owned by Benderson.
“We are proud of our continued expansion,” Matt Thon, Haines City division vice president at Aldi, said in a statement. “Opening new stores allows us to provide even more shoppers convenient access to fresh, high-quality groceries at unbeatable prices. We look forward to serving the Sarasota community at our newest location for many years to come.”
In addition to Sarasota, Aldi also has four locations in Manatee County, including one in Palmetto, and also has one store in Nokomis and one in North Port.
Aldi stores are typically about 12,000 square feet, which the company said makes the stores easier to navigate. They have open ceilings, natural lighting and are built with eco-friendly materials.
Aldi maintains its low prices by offering a selection of more than 90{85e7f5b37d2b3b32ff943ebdbb52de90edc4132ca8c2134f6732351e5442126f} exclusive brands, and the company guarantees its products are as good as or better than national brands. Some of its brands include Fit & Active, a healthy food brand, home decor brand Huntington Home and Heart to Tail pet products.
