Old-fashioned candy shops satisfy sweet tooth | Food For Thought

I have to admit, I love candy. All kinds — sweet, salty, chocolate, chewy, gummy, nutty. The list could go on and on.

If you are like me, you are always on the lookout for candy and might be willing to drive a bit to satisfy that sweet tooth.

Here are three old-timey candy shops in Northeast Pennsylvania to help keep your candy stores stocked this winter.

Where: 128 Luzerne Ave., West Pittston

Hours: Wednesdays through Sundays, 2 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Stepping into Ballyhoo in West Pittston is like stepping back in time.

The shop features ice cream sundaes and old-fashioned soda drinks in addition to the candy of your youth (and the youth of your parents and possibly your grandparents, too).

The candy is like you remember — a nickel, a dime and maybe a quarter for the satellite wafers, gummy bears and wax soda bottles.

Local shops hoping to residents support Small Business Saturday

Emily Johnson said she doesn’t know what to expect for Small Business Saturday, but with a 2-month-old clothing boutique in downtown Las Vegas, she heard it’s been called “Santa Saturday.”

“This being our first Small Business Saturday, we talked to other business owners in the area,” said Johnson, owner of For the Love, LV. “They all say that it’s a wonderful day.”

Excitement is high among local businesses this holiday shopping season as many look to recover from a tumultuous year marked by temporary forced shutdowns, capacity restrictions and even watching friends — fellow entrepreneurs — have to shutter their businesses.

Jamie Schwartz, director of industry and business engagement at UNLV’s Office of Economic Development, said she also anticipates a strong turnout at Small Business Saturday, noting that the pandemic changed how many consumers viewed small businesses.

“We saw local businesses
having to shut down, not able to
do business,

Make it easy at these North Jersey local shops

Fears of supply chain woes causing long wait times for shipping could cause more people to seek an old-fashioned shopping experience in local downtowns this Black Friday.

According to Forbes, the top two trends for Black Friday 2021 are in-store shopping and shopping local

“Given the choice between a mass-produced item or a local product, customers will increasingly buy local. American-made products will also see more sales in 2021,” said the Forbes article.

Denville, for example, will close its downtown for a “Holiday Shopping Open House on Ice” event from 5:30 to 9 p.m. It will include an outside holiday bar serving “hot toddies” and more.

“I’m calling it the Snowball Lounge,”  Ellen Sandman, executive director of the Downtown Denville Business Improvement District, told the Daily Record. “There’ll be libations, and they’ll be S’mores and hot chocolate for the kids.”

Denville isn’t the only downtown where people can stock

Marla Maples seen shopping at Bal Harbour Shops

Could there be another Trump quasi relative in our midst?

Soon after news broke that her only daughter, Tiffany Trump, had gotten engaged, Marla Maples was photographed making her way around Bal Harbour Shops.

Maples appeared to be on her shopping excursion sans TIffany or the groom to be, Michael Boulous, so maybe mom was looking for a wedding present. Or maybe she’s checking out the area for new digs.

Since we hear the young, newly engaged couple is looking for property in Miami Beach, it would stand to reason Maples would want to be close by.

The former Mrs. Donald Trump currently calls New York City home, but also has a place in Georgia, where she reportedly spent much of quarantine.

On Thursday, the 57-year-old posted a picture at a beach, with the caption: “Moving with the waves of life… and finding time to be still
