Hanami season is upon us again! Remember those pre-covid days, when our social media is filled with posts of the insanely gorgeous pink-hued sakura? Cherry blossom season typically begins from the end of March till early May. And what better timing than now for the Japan Government to announce the easing of quasi-emergency restrictions as of 21 March?
In Japan, Hanami (花見, “flower viewing”) is regarded as a national event. Everyone will be out and about, be it strolling or having a picnic, and admiring the transient beauty of flowers amongst the sea of pink cherry blossoms. Flowers (Hana) refer to cherry (sakura) or, less frequently, plum (ume) trees. Spring is associated with fresh starts, and sakura viewing brings with it hope and aspirations for the future – something we are in dire need of these days in light of the current political climate and the pandemic situation.
According to Color psychology, the impact of colours on our emotions and actions has far-reaching consequences. For example, the colour pink is often associated with “love and kindness” and is “thought to have a calming effect”. Little wonder sakura viewing induces feelings of unspeakable joy and bliss.
With the Vaccinated Travel Lanes to Japan on the horizon, experiencing Hanami this year may come true for some. However, if you prefer to adopt a wait-and-see approach, why not surround yourself with all things pink and sakura right here in Singapore! No sakura tree-lined streets required.
Yahoo Shopping lines up a wide range of tea and teaware, fashion, home and kitchen, beauty and other lifestyle products that are Sakura-themed or pink. Of course, there’s always the sakura-themed flower show at the Flower Dome. Here’s hoping this curated list eases a little of how much you miss Japan and brings a smile to your face!
